New Courses, New Faculty, and a New Home

There’s plenty to do at the University of Virginia School of Law this semester. This fall, UVA Law has some new courses, new faculty members, and a new home. In addition, a new children’s law center has opened its doors, and students will soon have a first-class training space to prepare for their careers. The School of Law will also honor the opening of its new home with an event that includes a keynote address from Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Samuel A. Alito.

New courses include Comparative Family Law, which will give students the opportunity to learn more about families in a variety of settings, as well as Trade Secret Law, which explores the legal aspects of protecting trade secrets. Students will also be able to study the business of law and explore how lawyers contribute to the growth of startup companies. Moreover, a new program, Law & Business, will offer professional development opportunities.

Another new center opens its doors on July 2. The Veterans Legal Clinic will open its doors for the first time at the University of South Carolina School of Law. The clinic offers free legal services to veterans and their family members. It will be operated by clinical instructor Clyde “Bennett” Gore Jr. Previously, Gore served in the military and is an expert in military and veteran’s law.

In addition, the School of Law will host a series of events for future law students to think about gender non-conforming people and the law. Additionally, the Pro Bono Board has finished its annual Harvest Hope-owen food drive. During its inaugural year, the project raised over 8,000 pounds of food.

The Center for Empirical Studies in Law will showcase the work of empirical law faculty. This interdisciplinary approach will train the next generation of lawyers. Located at the law school, the center will help students develop skills in empirical techniques to apply to legal practice.

The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice will expand clinical activities at the law school and expand its publishing initiatives. The center will also assist post-conflict countries in their development and help them improve their legal systems.

In addition, the Center for Children’s Law will establish a Children’s Law Training Center that will provide immersive learning simulations for students. This new home will also include state-of-the-art technology, grand architecture, and brand-new classrooms.

The Law Tech Hub features information on law schools, law school clubs, and law school media. It’s also the place to get updates on law school news, events, and other important updates.

The School of Law also recently announced its new faculty for the 2022-23 academic year. The new faculty includes Bennett Nelson, a law professor who joined the school in 2007; Professor Jaclyn Cherry, who will return to the School of Law; and Assistant Professors Etienne Toussaint and Madalyn Wasilczuk. These are just a few of the new and exciting faces that will be a part of the School of Law during the next two years.
